While I grew up in Mauritius and spent half of my life there, I have been living away from the motherland for over 2 decades and I have always had the yearning to do something for my country and its rainbow people. This quote from John Kennedy has deep appeal to me: “Ask not what your country can do for you — Ask what you can do for your country.” When, some years ago Shiv approached me to help out with the 5-2035 vision, I felt very privileged to be able to help in such a laudable dream of his and I could not say no – I felt compelled to give back to the country and help with this great project for Mauritius and Mauritians.
The challenge of CNCD (chronic non-communicable diseases; related preventable conditions of type II diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular diseases) is tremendous because in Mauritius it seems that we have come to accept the terrible situation as a fact of life. That 40% of the population is diabetic or pre-diabetic and that 80% of such cases can be avoided is simply not normal, but we Mauritians have come to take it as normal.
I have myself been diagnosed with Diabetes and I am fortunate that it was diagnosed at the earliest onset so that I can make the necessary lifestyle changes, but I personally know so many friends and relatives that did not get diagnosed in time and diabetes had already caused much permanent harm to them. Such a situation is a national security threat to the country. Our forefathers have worked too hard and made many sacrifices over the last 50 years of our independence to lose it to CNCD.
The motto of GFCH proposes, “In Unity, Strength”. All of us have very busy lives but if each one of us helps a little, I am convinced that together, we can make a tremendous difference for our rainbow nation to decrease CNCD within a generation.
We are not naïve to the thought that it will be nothing but an epic struggle to change entrenched behavior that enables our disastrous CNCD picture, but if we work together to empower our communities to action for better health, we will prevail. We do not have a choice; we must do it for our children’s future.
One of the most exciting aspects of the 5-2035 vision is that the idea of using our 5-2035 community health nurse practitioner (CHNP) under doctor supervision can be exported to other communities around the world for a greater good.
We need your help! I have used my technical skills and the limited time I have to establish the GFCH website and technology platform. To succeed, we will need more Mauritians and friends of Mauritius joining our mission to help expand the footprint of our organization in the web and in social media to generate a grassroots movement that the country has not seen before to curb CNCD.
